Darren Carroll, Senior Managing Director

Mr. Carroll leads the New Ventures Division of Eli Lilly and Company which includes both Lilly Ventures and Lilly Asian Ventures where he is the Senior Managing Director.  Prior to assuming his current role, Mr. Carroll was the founding chief executive officer of InnoCentive, Inc., the first e-business venture created by Lilly.  Among other positions Mr. Carroll has held at Lilly, he was the U.S. attorney for Prozac®. 

Mr. Carroll has also served as senior vice president of RealMed, a venture-backed company based in Indianapolis, which created the first real-time health claims adjudication system.  Earlier in his career, he practiced law with a large private law firm in New York and negotiated technology transactions for General Electric Company.

His education includes a J.D. degree from Syracuse University College of Law.  He also holds a bachelor's from Syracuse University (Phi Beta Kappa) and a masters of public administration degree from the Maxwell School of Syracuse, where he is a member of the Board of Advisors.  He is also a member of the Board of Directors for Lilly Ventures portfolio companies including Hydra Biosciences, InnoCentive and GlobeImmune.

S. Edward Torres, Managing Director

Ed Torres brings over 19 years of experience in the pharmaceutical and venture capital businesses to Lilly Ventures. Since co-founding Lilly BioVentures, he has led the investments in, and previously served on the boards of, Serenex (acquired by Pfizer), Conforma Therapeutics (acquired by Biogen Idec), Cabrellis Pharmaceuticals (acquired by Pharmion Corporation) and Fluidigm. Ed currently sits on the boards of Coserics, Cylene Pharmaceuticals, Trinity Biosystems and various non-profit institutions.

Prior to his role in Lilly Ventures, Ed had a diverse set of experiences throughout the domestic and international pharmaceutical businesses including operational finance, planning, M&A, business development and global marketing roles. As a co-founder of Lilly Argentina, he was part of the management team that built a successful and profitable business there. Ed received a bachelors of arts from Creighton University and a master of business administration from the University of Michigan Business School, where he was a Consortium Fellow.

Bryan Dunnivant, Principal

Mr. Dunnivant has more than 25 years experience in the biopharmaceutical industry and has held leadership roles across a wide range of functional areas including finance, strategy, R&D, international operations, new business development, and venture investing. Since joining Lilly Ventures in 2005 he has led investments in HemaQuest Pharmaceuticals (and now serves as the company's board chairman) and CITIC Pharmaceuticals. In addition, he currently represents Lilly Ventures on the board of portfolio companies Bayhill Therapeutics, Protagonist Therapeutics, and MedManage Systems. Prior to joining Lilly Ventures, he was Chief Operating Officer for e.Lilly, a division of Lilly focused on innovation, new business models, and spinning out new technologies and companies. During his tenure at e.Lilly, Mr. Dunnivant was involved in the founding, startup, incubation, and initial financing of several new life science companies. Mr. Dunnivant received his Bachelors of Science in Chemical Engineering from the University of Illinois, and a Masters of Business Administration from Butler University.

Ethan Hu, Ph.D., Senior Associate

Dr. Hu has over ten years of experience in life science research, marketing, and business development. Before joining Lilly Ventures, Dr. Hu was an Associate Director at Novartis Oncology responsible for early commercial development. In that role he led the development of a number of new products, drove pre-launch marketing activities, and built portfolio strategies. In addition, he was a core member of the Business Development & Licensing team and was responsible for the completion of a number of in-licensing deals. Previously, Dr. Hu was a research scientist at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, after finishing his postdoctoral work there. Dr. Hu is the author of several research articles and a reference book chapter, and was a recipient of a NIH grant. Dr. Hu received his BS in biology from Peking University (China), Ph.D. in molecular and cell biology from University of Maryland, and MBA from The University of Chicago Graduate School of Business.

Raymond M. Jordt, Senior Associate

Mr. Jordt joined Lilly Ventures in 2004 after spending over seven years in pharmaceutical research and development. Mr. Jordt currently serves as a board observer for Avid Radiopharmaceuticals. During his tenure at Lilly Accelerators, he helped create an early stage biotech company, Muroplex Therapeutics, and led the seed financing in the company and currently serves as Chairman of the Board. Prior to Lilly Ventures, Mr. Jordt was Project Leader for Drug Delivery in Lilly Research Labs. In this role, he was responsible for evaluating external drug delivery technologies and led several collaborations and projects. Mr. Jordt received his bachelor of science degree in biomedical engineering from Arizona State University, his master of science in biomedical engineering from the University of Memphis, and his master of business administration from Indiana University.
